FS2002 vs FS2004 Terrain Resolution

by admin last modified 2006-05-31 06:22

An examination of the maximum resolution at which terrain can be displayed in FS2002 and FS2004. IMPORTANT! Since this article was written, FS2004 Update has restored FS2004 to 19m capability.

What we find (3)

If you compare this screenshot with the one on the previous page, you'll see that apart from the shading, the results are identical.

The main conclusion to be drawn from this is that the terrain scenery polygons rendered in FS2002 are identical to the terrain scenery polygons rendered in FS2004.  The reason for this (apart from the similarity in the terrain scenery engine itself of course) is that we have specifically restricted FS2002 to TMVL=20 to match the hard-wired limit in FS2004. Although we have asked FS2004 for TMVL=21, the FS2004 code has limited the displayed terrain to the equivalent of TMVL=20.

This then is the limit of FS2004. Regardless of the setting of TMVL, the maximum terrain resolution which can be displayed is ~38.2m, equivalent to LOD 10 and TMVL=20.
